A homework schedule is handed out each week. Assignments are to be
completed and turned in when due. Homework for second grade is approximately
30 minutes per day. The only time there should be homework over a weekend is
when working on a special assignment.
Expectations:
Each family should be familiar with the St. Joseph School handbook and each
student is expected to follow school policies.
Communications:
Please send a note with your child if you would like to schedule a
conference. I will get back to you and set up a time to meet that is
mutually agreeable. I am unable to take phone calls during the scheduled
school day.
Field Trips:
We visit Stonewall Farm in the fall for a pumpkin presentation. Other field
trips will be scheduled if appropriate to our curriculum study.
Curriculum
Religion:
This Is Our Faith (Silver Burdett and Ginn), 1998. We begin our sacramental
preparation for first communion with the program titled We Celebrate the
Eucharist (Silver Burdett and Ginn). Our curriculum also includes use of a
gospel weekly titled „The Good News.‰ Through the units of study, students
will gain an awareness of the Catholic Church as a community to which we
belong, and they will be introduced to each of the sacraments, the Mass, and
our journey of faith.
Reading:
Scribner Series, Laidlaw, 1988. Skills acquired include phonics, word
identification skills, comparing and contrasting, cause/effect,
fantasy/reality, drawing conclusions, and predicting outcomes.
Phonics:
Phonics Level B, Modern Curriculum Press, 1991. We review skills which
include alphabetical order, initial, medial, and final consonants, blends,
digraphs, short/long vowels, and the use of Y as a vowel. The new skills
acquired include hard/soft C and G, vowel digraphs, diphthongs, R-controlled
vowels, double vowels, prefixes, suffixes, plurals, compound two-syllable
words, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
English:
Language for Daily Use, HBJ, 1988. New skills acquired include parts of a
sentence, listening and speaking, alphabetical order, study skills, library
skills, the writing process, and poetry.
Spelling:
Spelling Connections, Zaner-Bloser, 1988. New skills acquired include
spelling rules, word study, and introduction to the dictionary.
Handwriting:
Zaner-Bloser, 1991. We will begin cursive letter formation in January.
Math:
Mathematics Plus, Harcourt Brace & Company, 1994. Skills include adding and
subtracting 1, 2, and 3-digit numbers, place value to 99, time, money,
metric measurement, geometry, fractions, and multiplying. We use a variety
of math manipulatives and computer software to assist with these concepts.
Social Studies:
Scholastic News, How to Use a Map, Land Forms and Bodies of Water,
Continents and Oceans. Units of study include map and globe skills, family,
community, our nation, other countries and cultures, transportation,
continents and oceans, and landforms and other bodies of water.
Science:
Science Weekly, and Pyramid Café (a study of the five food groups,
sponsored by the American Dairy Association), Science,
Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, 2002. Topics among the earth, life, and physical
sciences include plants, animals, land and water habitats, weather, the
earth, the sun, planets, matter, energy, and magnetic forces.
Quizzes, chapter tests, and unit tests will be administered when appropriate
in the various subject areas.
Folders:
Work will be sent home approximately every two weeks. Papers are to be kept
at home, but folders are to be signed and returned to school. Red folders
will be sent home on Thursdays.
Reconciliation and First Eucharist:
Second graders who are Catholic participate in the sacramental rites of
Reconciliation and First Eucharist in the spring. Please contact your
director of religious education for specific information. In order for your
child to be eligible to participate in these sacraments, a copy of his or
her Catholic Baptismal Certificate must be on file.
