Language Arts continues to build grammar, the parts of speech, spelling, and
vocabulary skills.
Descriptive, expository, persuasive, and narrative styles of
writing are studied and practiced. A wide variety of literature is read,
including short stories, poetry, drama, and novels. Elementary Literary
analysis is introduced.
Social Studies explores the regions of Asia, Australia and Oceania, South and
Central America, Mexico, and Canada. The history, geography, culture, and
current events of each region are studied.
Math focuses on a pre-algebra curriculum. Topics include integers, rational
numbers, factors, and fractions, solving linear equations and inequalities,
graphing functions, statistics and probability, polynomials, and problem
solving.
Life Science leads students on the exploration of the simplest organism to the
most complex. They will start with bacteria and end with the human body.
Genetics, evolution, and the development of mankind are studied. Hands-on
activities include the making of models, dissection and other subject related
labs.
The goal of the seventh and eighth grade French Program is to complete the
equivalent of a high school French I course over a two-year period. The French
program emphasizes proficiency, or the ability to use French for communication,
both oral and written. Students continue to develop the pronunciation and
intonation patterns begun in fifth and sixth grade. Students expand their
understanding of French-speaking cultures through classroom guest, videos,
audiocassettes, authentic French materials, and a field trip to Quebec.
Religions focuses on the Life of Christ. Studying his life gives the students
insight into the development of the church and faith. Sunday readings are
explored in the Weekly Lectionary. Human sexuality, substance abuse, and AIDS
are discussed in accordance with diocesan guidelines.
